Guide for New International Students (2017 Spring)

Published: 2017-01-12 Views:

Before your arrival

I. Visa Application

Students should apply for an X1 or X2 visa for study in China by presenting the original and a photocopy of their valid passport, Admission Notice, the white page of the Visa Application Form (JW201/JW202) and Foreigner Physical Examination Form (if required) to the Chinese Embassy or a consulate-general in their home country. The Foreigner Physical Examination Form can be downloaded from http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/en/show/79.html. Please note that the yellow page of their Visa Application Form is required for the Residence Permit application after your arrival in China. Please do take good care of it.

International Students who will be studying in China for more than 6 months are required to obtain an X1 Visa.

Students who will be studying in China for less than 6 months should apply for an X2 Visa.

Important Reminder:

1. The X1 Visa is only valid for 30 days after your arrival. Students with an X1 visa should proceed to the Exit and Entry Administration Department of Xiamen Public Security Bureau to apply for a Residence Permit under the guidance of the university within 30 days of arrival. Otherwise, you will be considered as residing illegally. It is not advisable to arrive way before the day of registration since you will not be able to apply for a Residence Permit prior to registration.

2. If you are already holding a valid residence permit in other cities of China, you need to apply for a new one after arriving in Xiamen. Please remember to bring certificates issued by the previous university/employer to apply for a new residence permit.

3. For foreign citizens of Chinese origin, only after being officially recognized by the Exit and Entry Administration Bureau as foreign citizens can they make registration and apply for Residence Permit in China. Please refer to the Instructions on Citizenship Certification for more information and get the required documents ready before entry into China.

II. Fees and Finances

How Much Do I Need to Pay

Tuition: The tuition rates for the program/faculty you have been admitted to can be found at the website of the admissions office.

Insurance Fee: Except full scholarship students sponsored by the China Scholarship Council and the Confucius Headquarters/Hanban, other students whose study duration in China lasts for more than 6 months are required to join the Ping’an Group Insurance Scheme for Foreign students at the rate of 600RMB every academic year (1000RMB per academic year for students aged over 45), which covers life insurance, accidental injury medical treatment and hospitalization medical insurance in public hospitals in mainland China. Students whose study duration is less than 6 months can join the Ping’an Group Insurance Scheme for Foreign students on a voluntary basis.

Accommodation Fee:

On-campus Residences: students eligible for on-campus accommodation can live on campus. The Housing Office arranges rooms based on student types and students do not need to make reservations in advance. The accommodation fee ranges from 750-1500RMB/month on Siming Campus and from 1200-4000RMB/year on Xiang’an Campus. Students should pay a one-time deposit of 1000RMB upon check-in.

Off-campus Accommodation: if your program does not offer on-campus residences, it is best for you to arrive two weeks to a month before classes begin. There will be fewer options available as the new semester gets closer. You will need to arrange temporary accommodation, so that you will have a place to stay while you arrange your permanent housing. You may not be able to move in until the first day of the month. Remember to budget for the added cost of temporary accommodations. Non-University housing prices around Siming Campus vary from 1500-2500 RMB/month depending on size, facilities and location.

Cost of Course Materials: Students are expected to purchase course materials required. On average, this amounts to RMB 400-700 per academic year.

Food expenses: Students can have meals in XMU students’ canteens. Food cost is estimated at RMB 700-1000 per month.

Miscellaneous expenses: The student is responsible for medical expenses not covered by insurances, the visa fees and all other non-exempt expenses during his or her study.

Fees Payment

Full Scholarship students don’t need to pay for tuition fees, accommodation fee and insurance premiums but they will be charged a security deposit fee of 1000 RMB when checking in the residence halls.

Exchange students should pay relevant fees according to bilateral MOUs.

Relevant fees can be paid by cash or bank drafts on the day of registration.

Finances

There are several banks on campus or near Xiamen University where banking services are available. (Siming campus: Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China; Xiang’an campus: China Construction Bank, ATMs of Bank of China and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China).

We suggest all new students prepare at least 5,000 RMB in cash to cover accommodation, physical examination, insurance, transportation and meals, etc upon arrival since converting currencies might take several working days and full scholarship students might need to wait for around one month to get the first stipend.

Our estimation for the average cost of living per month in Xiamen is 5,000-7,000 RMB (housing, food and transportation included). There are limitations to the cash you can draw daily with your credit card. Please confirm with your bank before you leave how much you can draw daily in China.

III. What to bring

Do make sure that you keep at least 2 photocopies of your important documents. Below is the checklist of important documents that you must carry with you to Xiamen.

• Valid passport and visa

• Admission Letter from Xiamen University (original copy)

• Visa Application for Study in China form (also known as the JW201/JW202 form) (original)

• Passport photos (at least 3 copies)

• Physical examination record and blood test reports (original, if any)

IV. Packing for your trip

Travel light. Most daily necessities can be easily purchased in convenience stores, supermarkets and shopping malls in Xiamen.
